Pedro Arrupe Institute (PAI) was established in 2001 to quench the Spiritual thirst of the people of God in the Archdiocese of Goa and elsewhere. It is located in the idyllic village of Raia, nearly 7 kms away from Margao, the main hub of South Goa. It is spread over 37.2 acres land, on the backdrop of a hill. It offers an ideal setting for silence, stillness and solitude. Over the years, it has gradually made it’s presence felt in the surrounding towns and villages offering retreats, seminars, spiritual weekends, courses in Spirituality, Counselling and several other pastoral services. Numerous catholic groups along with various other religious congregations have found it as an ideal place for introspection and the searching after a “God-experience.”
The deepen your faith ministries, a part of PAI, caters to the Youth, Young Professionals, Ignatian Laity and laity in general. These groups are guided, animated by the Jesuit Fathers. It’s focus is to help an ordinary lay Catholic to deepen his/her faith through the study of Scripture, teachings of the Catholic Church, Ignatian Spirituality, Psychology, the spiritual celebration of the liturgy of the Church etc.,
In our courses, seminars and various ministries we introduce our participants to the Ignatian Spirituality. It is a spirituality for everyday life. It insists that God is present in our world and is active in our lives. It is a pathway to a deeper prayer, good decisions guided by keen discernment and an active life of service to others.
The spiritual dimension in every individual’s life plays a very significant role in living a wholistic life. For the growth and nourishment of the spiritual dimension there is need of specific times in the individual lives and also the need for specific spaces to withdraw and spend time with oneself and the Almighty to renew, rejuvenate and refresh one’s spiritual life. Every faith has these specific times and spaces – feasts, pilgrimages, places of worship, ashrams, spirituality centers.
The Xavier Retreat House, Baga, North Goa, perched picturesquely on a quaint hillock in Baga, Calangute, and jutting out into the sea with the light House in Candolim, is one such spiritual space. This Retreat House because of its location is encompassed with the poetic and magical effect of nature. From the white clouds above that sail by in solitude to the turbulent waves below that lash the rocks, sending gigantic sprays into the air, we can see God’s majestic creation manifesting itself in different ways.
For the last sixty-five years this house has provided a serene atmosphere of silence and peace to people from all walks of life, the young and the old, the laity and religious. It is this aura of tranquillity that surrounds the retreat house which brings people back again and again, for Retreats, Recollections, Workshops, Holidays and Family Reunions. The Retreat House was the brain child of Fr. Adrian Le Tellier S.J of Belgium, it stands on a plot donated by Dr. Crysostymo Egipsy of Calangute and is dedicated to St Francis Xavier.
Xavier Retreat House is a space, a place, a dream, an unfolding reality which fosters universal sister/brotherhood for global peace and cosmic harmony. All are welcome irrespective of caste, creed, community, gender or nationality. We offer a variety of life-giving spiritual practices leading to effective integration of body, mind, heart and spirit. Our specialty is Ignatian spirituality which frees us to seek God in all things. In the process the God of surprises finds us in all things. A deep experience of personal peace empowers us to become effective artisans of peace in a world of escalating violence.
Nestling in sea side surroundings and located on a hill top, it provides a calm and conducive environment for silence and solitude, prayer and reflection.
